Prime Minister Narendra Modi and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus virtually inaugurated the redeveloped WHO South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) building in New Delhi on December 19, 2025, during the closing of the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine marking a modern, sustainable landmark for regional health coordination.
Glimpse:
The ₹300 crore redeveloped complex at Indraprastha Estate expands from 10,500 to 40,500 sq.m., accommodating over 600 staff with green features like solar energy and rainwater harvesting. Executed by NBCC, it preserves heritage elements (including MF Husain murals) while housing both SEARO and WHO India offices, symbolizing deepened India-WHO ties.
On a crisp December evening in New Delhi, as the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine drew to a close at Bharat Mandapam, history unfolded virtually: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus jointly inaugurated the gleaming new headquarters of the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO). This wasn’t merely a ribbon-cutting; it was a powerful affirmation of India’s pivotal role in global public health, blending cutting-edge infrastructure with cultural heritage amid a backdrop of evolving digital and preventive health initiatives.
The redeveloped complex rising on the same Indraprastha Estate plot as the 1962 original represents a fourfold expansion in built-up area to 40,500 sq.m., nearly doubling capacity to over 600 personnel. Executed by NBCC (India) Limited under a 2019 MoU with the Ministry of Health, the ₹300 crore project masterfully conserves legacy artworks, including the iconic MF Husain mural “The History of Medicine,” now gracing the reception hall through INTACH’s restoration expertise.
Sustainability shines through every facet solar panels, rainwater harvesting, water recycling, indoor-outdoor gardens, and heat-reducing facades earn it green building credentials. Three interconnected towers soar to 82.7 meters, connected by a common podium featuring advanced conference halls, an auditorium, and collaborative spaces poised to orchestrate health strategies for 11 nations home to over 2 billion people.
This milestone weaves seamlessly into India’s broader health renaissance: from sovereign cloud platforms securing sensitive data (L&T Vyoma’s recent alliances) and AI-driven preventive tools (TAKE Solutions’ push) to mobile surgical training democratizing skills (Medtronic’s tier-2 labs) and biologics manufacturing scale-ups (Kashiv’s ₹648 crore boost). The inauguration, coinciding with traditional medicine deliberations, underscores a holistic pivot integrating ancient wisdom with modern tech, much like ongoing ABDM expansions and HealthTech summits advocating hyper-personalized care.
Dr Tedros hailed it as “more than a workplace a symbol of shared vision,” while Indian leaders echoed collective resolve against regional challenges. As SEARO coordinates flagship efforts from NCD prevention to emergency response this future-ready hub amplifies India’s leadership, fostering innovations that ripple across South-East Asia and beyond.
“This is more than a workplace it’s a symbol of our shared vision and commitment to advance health and wellbeing across the region and beyond.”
