Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced a cluster of high-profile healthcare projects totaling over ₹1,800 crore to be launched across the state this month. The ambitious package includes a state-of-the-art Institute of Organ Transplantation, advanced cancer research and treatment facilities, surgical block expansions, and growth in traditional medicine infrastructure, aiming to significantly boost specialized care, medical education, and overall access to quality healthcare in Kerala.

Glimpse:

The Kerala government is rolling out healthcare initiatives exceeding ₹1,800 crore, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan set to inaugurate key projects. Highlights include the ₹643.88 crore Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode as a Centre of Excellence for transplant services, the ₹387 crore Cochin Cancer Research Center, a ₹257 crore eight-storey surgical block at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital, ₹242.42 crore expansion of the Regional Cancer Center in Thiruvananthapuram, and development of the International Research Institute of Ayurveda in Kannur. These efforts address gaps in organ transplants, oncology, surgical capacity, and evidence-based traditional medicine, strengthening both specialized and general services for residents.

Kerala’s healthcare sector is poised for a transformative boost as the state government announces a comprehensive package of projects valued at more than ₹1,800 crore. Health Minister Veena George revealed that a series of high-profile initiatives will be launched across various districts this month, marking an unprecedented phase of expansion in medical infrastructure and specialized care.

The flagship project is the Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode, with an investment of ₹643.88 crore. Envisioned as a Centre of Excellence, it will coordinate advanced treatment, surgeries, post-transplant rehabilitation, research, and training under one umbrella, significantly enhancing organ transplant capabilities in the state.

Cancer care receives major attention with two key developments: the Cochin Cancer Research Center (CCRC) at an estimated cost of ₹387 crore, aimed at bolstering diagnosis, treatment, and research in central Kerala where public-sector oncology facilities have been limited, and the expansion of the Regional Cancer Center in Thiruvananthapuram through a new 14-storey building costing approximately ₹242.42 crore to alleviate space constraints and improve patient services.

Surgical and critical care capacity will expand through an eight-storey block with 526 beds at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital, funded at about ₹257 crore. This addition will enhance operation theatres, ICU facilities, and overall surgical services.

Traditional medicine also features prominently with the establishment of the International Research Institute of Ayurveda in Kannur on a 300-acre campus, including a 100-bed hospital, research labs, and medicinal plant resources to advance evidence-based Ayurveda. Additionally, the second phase of the Kerala State Homoeopathic Cooperative Pharmacy in Alappuzha will increase manufacturing capacity for homoeopathic medicines.

These projects, to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the coming weeks, represent a strategic push to bridge gaps in specialized treatment, support medical education, and ensure equitable access to quality care. They build on Kerala’s strong public health foundation, addressing rising demands for advanced interventions like organ transplants and cancer management while reinforcing commitment to both modern and traditional systems.

“Kerala’s health sector is all set to witness an unprecedented phase of expansion, with projects worth over ₹1,800 crore to be launched this month. These projects will be a significant addition to the health and medical infrastructure in the State, enabling better access to quality care.”
