Achin Gupta, who joined Cipla in 2021 and served as Global COO since February 2025, will lead the company for a five year term (subject to shareholder approval). Global pharmaceutical major Cipla has announced a key leadership change with the appointment of Achin Gupta as its new Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer. The transition took effect on April 1, 2026, as part of a well planned succession process designed to ensure continuity while the company enters its next growth phase.
Gupta succeeds Umang Vohra, who led Cipla for nearly ten years after joining in 2015 and taking charge as MD & Global CEO in 2016. During his tenure, Vohra drove significant transformation, including global footprint expansion, strengthening of digital and manufacturing capabilities, and a strong focus on innovation and patient centric care.
Achin Gupta brings deep operational expertise to the role. He joined Cipla in 2021, successfully led the “One India” business with strong profitability and expansion in chronic therapies, and was elevated to Global Chief Operating Officer in February 2025. As GCOO, he oversaw commercial operations, manufacturing, supply chain, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). He has been serving as CEO-designate since January 2026. Gupta holds an M.Tech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, with over two decades of experience across Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Abbott Laboratories, and A.T. Kearney.
In his new role, Gupta is expected to drive sustainable business growth, strengthen Cipla’s presence in international markets, and continue the company’s innovation led journey. Alongside his appointment, Cipla also elevated Saurabh Gambhir and Satyavan Manikani as Senior Management Personnel, effective from the same date.
“I am honoured to take on this responsibility and will focus on driving sustainable growth, strengthening our global presence, and continuing our innovation led expansion, building on the strong foundation laid by Umang.”
