UToledo Health Expands Nabla’s Ambient AI in Epic to Cut Documentation Time and Reduce Backlogs

University of Toledo Health (UToledo Health) in Ohio is scaling Nabla’s ambient AI clinical documentation solution integrated directly with its Epic EHR. Following a successful 8-week pilot, the health system is deploying the tool to hundreds of physicians and advanced practice providers across multiple specialties to streamline documentation, improve accuracy, and reduce administrative burden.

Glimpse:

During the pilot, UToledo Health achieved a 29% reduction in time required for chart closure and significantly lowered documentation backlogs from more than 400 open charts to fewer than 30 in several departments. The AI listens to clinician patient conversations in real time and automatically generates structured clinical notes within the Epic workflow, supporting primary care and surgical specialties while enhancing revenue cycle performance.

University of Toledo Health has decided to expand its use of Nabla’s ambient AI-powered clinical documentation tool after a highly positive pilot phase. The solution integrates seamlessly with the health system’s Epic electronic health record, allowing clinicians to generate structured notes natively within their existing workflow without manual data entry.

The ambient AI listens to natural conversations between doctors and patients during visits and automatically converts them into accurate, structured clinical documentation. This significantly reduces the time clinicians spend on administrative tasks, enabling them to focus more on direct patient care. The system also improves documentation completeness and coding specificity, which supports better capture of higher acuity visits and strengthens overall revenue cycle performance.

In the 8-week pilot conducted across multiple specialties, UToledo Health reported a 29% reduction in the time needed to close charts. Documentation backlogs also dropped sharply in several departments  from over 400 open charts to fewer than 30. These results prompted the health system to roll out the solution to hundreds of physicians and advanced practice providers.

This deployment reflects UToledo Health’s commitment to adopting next generation clinical innovation responsibly. By embedding AI into daily workflows, the academic health system aims to enhance physician experience, reduce burnout, and deliver higher quality care to patients.

“Ambient AI documentation represents a shift in how we think about the electronic health record. Instead of clinicians adapting to technology, technology is now adapting to clinicians.”
