ABDM Implementation Accelerates in Andaman & Nicobar Islands as Pharmacies Mandated to Adopt ABDM-Enabled MIS

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is gaining strong momentum in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with pharmacies now required to deploy ABDM-enabled Management Information Systems (MIS). The directive aims to enable seamless digital prescriptions, real-time medicine dispensing tracking, integration with patient ABHA records, and improved supply chain visibilityโ€”enhancing medication adherence, reducing errors, and strengthening primary care delivery in the remote island territory.

Glimpse:

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands administration has mandated all registered pharmacies to integrate ABDM-compliant MIS software by a specified deadline, allowing pharmacists to verify e-prescriptions via QR codes, update dispensing records directly into patientsโ€™ ABHA-linked health accounts, and access real-time stock and expiry data. The rollout is supported by training workshops, free software onboarding assistance, and integration with existing pharmacy billing systems. The move is expected to improve medicine availability, minimize stockouts, curb counterfeit drugs, and create a fully digital medicine supply chain across the islands.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration has intensified its Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) implementation by issuing a directive requiring all registered pharmacies in the Union Territory to adopt ABDM-enabled Management Information Systems (MIS) within a stipulated timeframe. The order, issued in late February 2026, follows successful pilots in Port Blair and other accessible islands and marks a decisive step toward creating a fully digital, transparent, and patient-centric medicine dispensing ecosystem in one of Indiaโ€™s most geographically challenging regions.

Under the mandate, pharmacies must integrate ABDM-compliant software that connects directly to the national ABDM network. Pharmacists can now scan QR codes from digital prescriptions generated by ABDM-linked doctors, verify patient identity through ABHA authentication, dispense medicines, and instantly update the patientโ€™s digital health record with details of the drugs issued, batch numbers, expiry dates, and dispensing timestamps. This closed-loop system ensures complete traceability from prescription to delivery, significantly reducing medication errors, duplicate dispensing, and potential misuse of controlled substances.

The initiative is supported by comprehensive training programs conducted by the National Health Authority (NHA) and the UT Health Department for pharmacists and pharmacy owners. Free onboarding assistance, subsidized software integration costs for small pharmacies, and technical support helplines have been established to ensure smooth adoption even in remote islands with limited internet connectivity (using offline-first modes with periodic sync). Several leading ABDM-integrated pharmacy software providers have already customized their solutions for the islandsโ€™ unique requirements, including multi-island stock visibility and emergency medicine resupply alerts.

Health officials in Port Blair stated that the move will dramatically improve medicine availability monitoring, help prevent stockouts of essential drugs, reduce wastage due to expiry, and curb circulation of counterfeit or substandard medicines in the islands. It will also empower patients with full visibility of their medication history via the ABHA app, enable better chronic disease management through refill reminders, and support teleconsultation follow-ups with accurate dispensing records. The UT administration plans to link the pharmacy network with the islandsโ€™ telemedicine hubs and district hospitals for end-to-end digital care continuity.

This directive positions Andaman and Nicobar Islands among the frontrunners in ABDM adoption in remote territories, setting an example for other Union Territories and island regions. The integration is expected to serve as a force multiplier for public health delivery in areas where specialist access and supply chain reliability remain persistent challenges.

โ€œABDM is transforming healthcare even in our remotest islands. By bringing pharmacies online with secure, patient-linked systems, we are ensuring medicines reach the right person at the right time transparently and safely.โ€
