AIIMS Bhubaneswar Set to Launch Robotic Paediatric Surgery! A Milestone for Precision Child Care

AIIMS Bhubaneswar is gearing up to introduce robotic surgery in its Paediatric Surgery Department, as announced by Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas. This advanced facility will enable minimally invasive procedures for children, offering greater precision, reduced recovery time, and fewer complications marking a significant leap in paediatric healthcare for Eastern India.

Glimpse:

The new robotic paediatric surgery capability builds on AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s existing strengths in robotic interventions (e.g., knee replacements and adult urology). It addresses the unique challenges of operating on small anatomies, potentially covering conditions like congenital anomalies, tumors, and urological issues. The initiative aligns with national efforts to expand high-end public healthcare, reducing patient migration to private or metro centers.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar is poised to revolutionize paediatric surgical care by rolling out robotic-assisted procedures in its Paediatric Surgery Department. Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas revealed the plans on December 31, 2025, emphasizing the technology’s potential to deliver safer, more precise interventions for young patients.

Robotic systems likely building on platforms like da Vinci or similar offer enhanced 3D visualization, tremor filtration, and articulated instruments that navigate delicate paediatric tissues with unmatched dexterity. Benefits include smaller incisions, less pain, lower infection risks, shorter hospital stays, and quicker return to normal activities critical for growing children.

This development extends AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s robotic expertise, which already includes successful knee replacements and other adult procedures. The paediatric focus will tackle complex cases such as hypospadias repair, pyeloplasty for kidney obstructions, tumor resections, and thoracic surgeries conditions often requiring high precision to preserve function and minimize scarring.

The announcement underscores AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s role as a quaternary care leader in Odisha, with ongoing expansions in genomics, oncology, and trauma. By bringing robotic paediatric surgery to the public sector, it promises affordable access under schemes like Ayushman Bharat, bridging gaps for families in Eastern India.

Training for surgeons and staff is underway, ensuring seamless integration. While timelines for the first procedures remain “soon,” the facility is expected to operationalize in the coming months.
