AIIMS Jammu Proposes Global Centre of Excellence for AI in Healthcare Pioneering Diagnostics, Robotics & Telemedicine

AIIMS Jammu has submitted a proposal to the Union Health Ministry for establishing a Global Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, in collaboration with premier institutions from Israel and the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to integrate AI for advanced diagnostics, predictive medicine, clinical decision support, robotics, and telemedicine, while also planning India’s first dedicated Institute of Traumatology.

Glimpse:

Announced in late December 2025 by Executive Director Prof. Shakti Kumar Gupta, the Global CoE will leverage AI to deliver faster, more accurate, and cost-effective patient care. The governing body has approved multiple specialized CoEs, including robotics/techno-surgery and telemedicine. AIIMS Jammu, expanding to 750 beds, already leads with the nation’s only Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine among AIIMS institutions, alongside patient-centric digital tools like indoor navigation apps and e-carts.

AIIMS Jammu is set to emerge as a trailblazer in technology-driven healthcare with its ambitious proposal for a Global Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. The proposal, submitted to the Union Health Ministry, envisions international collaborations with top institutions from Israel and the UK to harness AI for transformative applications in diagnostics, predictive analytics, clinical decision-making, robotic assistance, and telemedicine services.

Prof. Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO, highlighted the CoE’s potential: It will enable AI-powered diagnostics for rapid, precise results; predictive medicine to forecast outcomes; and clinical support systems to aid physicians in complex cases. This aligns with broader digitization efforts, including approved CoEs in robotics and techno-surgery, telemedicine/telecare, predictive medical technology, ophthalmology, dental sciences, comprehensive cancer care, and more.

Complementing the AI focus is a proposal for India’s first Institute of Traumatology, building on the existing Trauma and Emergency Department. This multidisciplinary facility will provide end-to-end care from stabilization to rehabilitation addressing the high burden of trauma, especially road accidents in the region.

AIIMS Jammu currently operates 400 beds (expanding to 750), with ongoing recruitment to bolster faculty and staff. It stands out with unique assets like the Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine (the only one among AIIMS for high-end testing) and an expanding Oncology Unit offering chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. An advanced biochemistry lab uses waterless dry chemistry for efficient reporting.

Patient convenience is prioritized through innovations like the AIIMS Indoor Navigation App, Patient Care Manager, Rogi Sahayak Mitra, Parikrama Seva e-carts, Swasthya App, and AYUSH screening.

These developments position AIIMS Jammu as a beacon of modern, accessible healthcare in northern India, blending cutting-edge tech with comprehensive services.

β€œWe have proposed a Global Centre of Excellence for AI in Healthcare to enhance patient care through AI-enabled diagnostics, predictive medicine and clinical decision support.”
