India’s flagship health scheme, PM Jan Arogya Yojana, has delivered over ₹1.5 lakh crore in free hospital care, with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka emerging as top performing states in utilization.
Glimpse:
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has crossed ₹1.51 lakh crore in free healthcare services since its launch, covering over 106 million hospital admissions. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka lead in utilization, highlighting stronger implementation and healthcare efficiency.
India’s flagship public health insurance scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, has achieved a major milestone by delivering more than ₹1.51 lakh crore worth of free hospital care to beneficiaries across the country.
Launched in September 2018 under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, the scheme provides annual health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family to nearly 40% of India’s most vulnerable population.
So far, the program has facilitated over 106 million hospital admissions nationwide, reflecting its massive scale and impact.
In terms of state wise performance, southern states have emerged as clear leaders. Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of hospital admissions at around 11 million, followed closely by Karnataka with approximately 10.93 million admissions.
Interestingly, larger states like Uttar Pradesh, despite having the highest number of empanelled hospitals and beneficiaries, rank lower in actual utilization highlighting gaps in awareness, administrative efficiency, and healthcare delivery systems.
The variation in performance across states indicates that strong healthcare infrastructure, better digital integration, and effective governance play a crucial role in maximizing the scheme’s benefits. Southern states, historically known for robust public health systems, appear to be leveraging these advantages effectively.
The scheme covers nearly 2,000 medical procedures, including diagnostics, surgeries, ICU care, and medicines, offered through a cashless model. Common treatments include dialysis, cataract surgeries, caesarean deliveries, and oncology services.
In a recent expansion, the government extended coverage to all senior citizens above 70 years, regardless of income, potentially benefiting nearly 60 million elderly individuals and further increasing the scheme’s reach.
Overall, PM-JAY continues to play a transformative role in reducing out of pocket healthcare expenses in India while improving access to quality medical care for millions.
“₹1.5 lakh crore in free care isn’t just a number it’s millions of lives protected from financial hardship.”
