Strategic Merger Announcement
The WVU Health System and Independence Health System have jointly announced that Independence’s five hospital sites  Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe, and Westmoreland  will fully integrate into WVU Medicine in the fall of 2026. Under the terms, the entire Independence physician network and affiliated subsidiaries will transition into the WVU system. 

$800M Investment to Boost Infrastructure & Services
WVU Health System is committing $800 million in capital over five years to modernize Independence’s hospitals.  Targeted improvements include upgrading the ER at Butler Memorial Hospital and redeveloping the campus of Westmoreland Hospital. The expansion also aims to grow specialty care, improve clinical access, and integrate population-health strategies through Peak Health, WVU’s affiliated insurance entity.

Mission & Community Impact
Leadership from both health systems framed the deal as transformational. Ken DeFurio, President & CEO of Independence, emphasized the shared values between the organizations and the opportunity to deliver “innovative, community-centered care.” Albert L. Wright Jr., President & CEO of WVU Health System, expressed confidence that the partnership will strengthen regional health delivery while honoring Independence’s role in its communities. 

Next Steps & Regulatory Path
The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and bondholder consent.  WVU expects the deal to formally close around October 1, 2026, according to its leadership.  Upon closing, the hospitals will operate under the WVU Medicine brand, unifying operations, shared resources, and clinical strategy.
