Jharkhand Goes Digital New Health Cards & ₹15 Lakh Cover Under Ayushman’s Next Phase

Jharkhand has announced the issuance of digital health cards under the Ayushman-Abua scheme and simultaneously raised the health-insurance cover to ₹15 lakh per eligible family  a move aimed at improving access, reducing paperwork, and expanding financial protection for millions.

Glimpse:

The state’s Health Minister confirmed that all existing beneficiaries will receive new digital cards, making patient verification faster, treatment smoother, and records interoperable across government and empanelled private hospitals. The enhanced ₹15 lakh cover up from the earlier ₹5 lakh  comes as part of the expanded benefit under the combined Ayushman-Abua framework.

In a significant step forward for public-health infrastructure, Jharkhand recently launched digital health cards for beneficiaries of the Ayushman-Abua healthcare scheme. The announcement was made during an orientation programme under the joint aegis of the national Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and state-level reforms.

The digital-card system aims to replace paper-based documentation, streamline patient verification, and enable seamless data sharing between government hospitals and private-sector empanelled facilities. According to the state Health Minister, this will cut bureaucratic delays, reduce fraud or duplication, and improve continuity of care when patients shift between hospitals or across districts.

Alongside the digital rollout, the state has also revised the insurance coverage for eligible families: the benefit is being raised to ₹15 lakh per family. This enhancement is billed as a major expansion over the earlier ₹5 lakh cover  offering protection against high medical costs, especially for serious illnesses and complex treatments.

Health-department officials say the combined scheme aims to cover all previously enrolled Ayushman beneficiaries, as well as households under state-level welfare schemes, thereby widening the safety net to include many poorer and more vulnerable families who previously lacked access to comprehensive cover.

If implemented effectively, the digital-card + high-cover model could significantly reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for thousands of Jharkhand families, increase access to tertiary care, and improve health-equity across rural and urban areas.

“With digital health cards and an increased cover to ₹15 lakh, we aim to make healthcare not just accessible, but assured for every eligible family in Jharkhand.”
