Karnataka Clears ₹450-Bed High-Tech Hospital on RGUHS Campus in Ramanagara

The Karnataka government has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art 450-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital on the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) campus in Ramanagara. The facility will serve as a major training hub for medical and allied health students while providing advanced tertiary care to the surrounding rural and semi-urban population, reducing the burden on Bengaluru’s overcrowded hospitals.

Glimpse:

The proposed 450-bed hospital will include modern ICUs, modular operation theatres, advanced diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, PET-CT, cath labs), specialized centres for cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, and mother & child care, along with dedicated research and skill-training facilities. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs, strengthen medical education in the state, and improve access to quality healthcare in Ramanagara district and neighbouring areas.

The Karnataka Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has formally cleared the establishment of a 450-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital on the campus of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Ramanagara district. The decision, taken during a cabinet meeting on February 25, 2026, marks a significant step toward strengthening medical education infrastructure and expanding tertiary healthcare services in one of the state’s rapidly developing peripheral districts.

The new hospital will function as a teaching and referral facility affiliated with RGUHS, supporting undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), and super-specialty training programs. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including fully equipped intensive care units (medical, surgical, cardiac, neonatal), modular operation theatres with laminar airflow, advanced diagnostic radiology suites (MRI, multi-slice CT, digital mammography, PET-CT), cardiac catheterization laboratories, and comprehensive pathology and molecular diagnostics labs.

Special emphasis will be given to high-demand specialties such as interventional cardiology, medical and surgical oncology, neurosurgery and neurology, advanced orthopaedics and joint replacement, high-risk obstetrics with level-III NICU, and trauma & emergency services with 24×7 operation. The hospital will also house dedicated centres for minimally invasive surgery, robotic-assisted procedures, organ transplantation support, and rehabilitation services.

The project is expected to greatly benefit the population of Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, Channapatna, Kanakapura, Magadi, and neighbouring districts by reducing the need for patients to travel to Bengaluru for specialized treatment. It will also help decongest major hospitals in Bengaluru, including those under the government and teaching institutions.

The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader vision of equitable healthcare access, strengthening medical education capacity, and addressing the rising burden of non-communicable diseases in semi-urban and rural areas. Funding will be sourced through a combination of state budget allocations, central government grants under the National Health Mission and PMSSY schemes, and potential PPP components for select high-end equipment and facilities.

Construction is slated to begin within the next 3–6 months, with phased commissioning targeted between 2028 and 2030. The hospital will create substantial employment opportunities for doctors, nurses, paramedics, technicians, and support staff, while also serving as a key training ground for RGUHS-affiliated students.

Health experts and medical education leaders have welcomed the move, noting that the new facility will help address the acute shortage of teaching beds and specialty training seats in Karnataka, particularly in the non-metro regions.

“This 450-bed hospital on the RGUHS campus will not only train the next generation of doctors but also bring world-class tertiary care closer to the people of Ramanagara and surrounding districts.”
