P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre in Mumbai has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre equipped with cutting-edge robotic and AI-assisted technologies. The new facility aims to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinsonโ€™s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions, marking a major step forward in specialised neuro-care in western India.

Glimpse:

Opened on January 18, 2026, the centre integrates advanced robotic gait trainers, virtual reality therapy, brain-computer interface tools, functional electrical stimulation, and AI-driven motor assessment systems. It offers personalised, evidence-based rehabilitation programmes delivered by a dedicated team of neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and neuropsychologists. The facility is designed to serve both inpatients and outpatients, with a strong focus on early intervention, neuroplasticity-driven recovery, and long-term functional independence.

P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre has strengthened its position as a leading tertiary care institution in Mumbai with the launch of a dedicated, advanced Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre. The inauguration, held on January 18, 2026, was led by senior hospital leadership and attended by prominent neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, and patient advocacy groups.

The centre is purpose-built to address the growing burden of neurological disabilities in India, where stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinsonโ€™s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions affect millions. Traditional rehabilitation often suffers from limited access to specialised equipment, inconsistent therapy delivery, and long waiting periods. Hindujaโ€™s new facility directly tackles these gaps by combining human expertise with the latest in neurotechnology.

Key technologies deployed include:

Robotic gait training systems that provide body-weight-supported walking with real-time feedback to improve motor recovery after stroke or spinal injury.

Virtual reality and augmented reality platforms for immersive therapy targeting balance, coordination, cognitive retraining, and upper-limb function.

Brain-computer interface tools that assist patients with severe motor impairments in regaining communication or movement control.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices for muscle activation and neuroplasticity enhancement.

AI-powered movement analysis and progress tracking to customise therapy intensity and predict recovery trajectories.

The centre operates under a multidisciplinary team model, with daily collaborative rounds involving neurologists, physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, and orthotists/prosthetists. Programmes are tailored to individual needs, incorporating early mobilisation for ICU patients, intensive inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient follow-up, and home-based tele-rehabilitation continuity.

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala, Medical Director of P. D. Hinduja Hospital, said: โ€œNeurological recovery depends on timely, intensive, and highly specialised intervention. Our new Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre brings together the best of human expertise and advanced technology to give patients the best possible chance of regaining independence and quality of life.โ€

The facility also includes dedicated spaces for family training, caregiver support, and psychological counselling recognising that neuro-disability affects entire families. A research wing will conduct clinical studies on neuroplasticity, robotic rehabilitation outcomes, and technology-assisted recovery, contributing to national and global evidence.

The launch aligns with growing national emphasis on rehabilitation medicine, particularly after the inclusion of rehabilitation services under Ayushman Bharat and the rising incidence of stroke and neuro-degenerative conditions in Indiaโ€™s ageing population.

With this centre, P. D. Hinduja Hospital reaffirms its commitment to comprehensive, technology-enabled care offering hope and tangible recovery pathways to patients and families across western India and beyond.

โ€œNeurological recovery depends on timely, intensive, and highly specialised intervention. Our new centre brings together the best of human expertise and advanced technology to give patients the best possible chance of regaining independence.โ€
