The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has successfully rolled out its Hospital Information System (HIS) at the PGI Satellite Centre in Sangrur, effective January 1, 2026. This digitization drive enhances operational efficiency, transparency, and patient convenience at the 300-bed facility, with plans to replicate the model at the main Chandigarh campus.
Glimpse:
The HIS implementation digitizes core services including patient registration, appointments, records management, and billing at Sangrur streamlining workflows and reducing paperwork. Previously delayed, this rollout addresses integration challenges and paves the way for seamless data sharing with the parent institute, improving care delivery in Punjab’s underserved Malwa region.
PGIMER Chandigarh has marked the New Year with a significant digital advancement by operationalising its comprehensive Hospital Information System (HIS) at the Satellite Centre in Sangrur, Punjab, starting January 1, 2026. This move integrates the 300-bed facility fully into PGIMER’s digital ecosystem, enabling paperless operations and real-time data synchronization with the main campus.
The HIS covers essential functions: online patient registration, appointment scheduling, electronic medical records, laboratory and radiology reporting, pharmacy management, and billing drastically cutting wait times and administrative burdens. Patients benefit from quicker access, digital prescriptions, and portable health records, while staff gain tools for better resource allocation and monitoring.
Prof Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER, emphasized the broader vision “The successful rollout of HIS at Sangrur reflects PGIMER’s focused approach towards comprehensive digitisation of hospital services. This digital model will soon be replicated at PGIMER, Chandigarh, to further enhance patient care and operational excellence.”
The Sangrur centre, inaugurated in 2024 after years of development (foundation laid in 2013 at ₹449 crore), serves as a tertiary hub for specialties like oncology, dialysis, orthopaedics, and general surgery alleviating pressure on the overcrowded Chandigarh institute. Prior delays in HIS deployment had hindered full integration with schemes like Ayushman Bharat, but this operationalization resolves those bottlenecks.
This step reinforces PGIMER’s commitment to leveraging technology for equitable, efficient public healthcare, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
“The successful rollout of HIS at Sangrur reflects PGIMER’s focused approach towards comprehensive digitisation of hospital services.”
