Philips Eyes Hyderabad as Emerging Knowledge Hub as Telangana Accelerates AI in Healthcare

Published: January 21, 2026

Global healthcare technology leader Philips is actively exploring Hyderabad as a potential hub for AI-driven innovation and knowledge collaboration, aligning with Telanganaโ€™s aggressive push to position the state as Indiaโ€™s leading centre for artificial intelligence in healthcare. The interest follows a series of high-level discussions and reflects the state governmentโ€™s strategy to attract multinational R&D investments in digital health, medical imaging, and precision diagnostics.

Glimpse:

Philips executives have held preliminary talks with Telangana IT and Industries Department officials and key academic institutions in Hyderabad, focusing on joint research, AI model development for radiology and cardiology, and potential co-creation of AI solutions tailored to Indian healthcare challenges. The move coincides with Telanganaโ€™s announcement of dedicated AI healthcare accelerators, skill development programmes, and incentives under the stateโ€™s emerging โ€˜AI for Healthโ€™ policy framework, positioning Hyderabad as a rival to Bengaluru in the AI-health intersection.

Philips, the Dutch multinational renowned for its leadership in medical imaging, patient monitoring, and AI-enabled clinical decision support, is reportedly evaluating Hyderabad as a strategic knowledge and innovation hub in India. The interest was confirmed during discussions between Philips senior leadership and Telangana government representatives in mid-January 2026, as the state intensifies efforts to attract global technology companies to its growing AI and health-tech ecosystem.

Hyderabadโ€™s appeal lies in its established IT and life-sciences cluster, presence of top-tier institutions such as IIIT-Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad, and the University of Hyderabad, and proactive government policies promoting AI adoption in healthcare. Telangana has already launched several AI-focused initiatives, including Centres of Excellence in AI for healthcare, skill development programmes for medical professionals, and incentives for companies setting up R&D centres or innovation labs in the state.

The discussions with Philips reportedly centred on collaborative opportunities in:

AI-enhanced medical imaging for faster and more accurate diagnosis of tuberculosis, cardiovascular diseases, and oncology

Predictive analytics for patient monitoring in ICUs and high-dependency units

Development of India-specific AI models addressing local disease patterns and demographic diversity

Training programmes for radiologists and clinicians on AI-augmented workflows

While no formal announcement or investment commitment has been made, sources indicate that Philips sees Hyderabad as a complementary node to its existing operations in Bengaluru and Pune. The company already collaborates with several Indian hospitals and research institutions on AI projects, and a deeper presence in Telangana would give it access to a vibrant talent pool and strong government support.

Telangana IT and Industries Minister Sridhar Babu welcomed the interest, stating: โ€œHyderabad is fast becoming Indiaโ€™s AI capital for healthcare. We are creating an environment where global leaders like Philips can innovate alongside our startups, researchers, and clinicians to solve real-world problems for India and the world.โ€

The development reflects a broader trend: Indian states are increasingly competing to attract multinational health-tech investments by offering policy incentives, talent ecosystems, and public-private collaboration opportunities. For Philips, expanding in Hyderabad would strengthen its footprint in one of the fastest-growing healthcare markets globally while contributing to Indiaโ€™s ambition of becoming a leader in AI-enabled precision medicine.

The Philipsโ€“Telangana discussions are still at an exploratory stage, but both sides have expressed optimism about forging long-term partnerships that could accelerate the adoption of AI-driven diagnostics and care pathways across the state and beyond.
