The Government of Tripura has launched a landmark telemedicine linkage with AIIMS New Delhi and entered into a strategic partnership with GNRC Hospitals to significantly enhance tertiary and super-specialty care access for residents. The initiative integrates real time specialist consultations, second opinions, and referral pathways from Tripuraβs district hospitals and community health centres directly to AIIMS experts, while GNRC will provide on ground support for complex cases, training, and capacity building addressing the long standing challenge of limited advanced care in the northeastern state.
Glimpse:
Announced on January 28, 2026, the AIIMS telemedicine link enables 24/7 access to super-specialty departments (cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, etc.) for Tripura patients via high-definition video consultations. GNRC Hospitals will collaborate on skill development for local doctors, establish referral protocols, and facilitate follow up care. The combined initiative is expected to reduce patient travel to Delhi or Guwahati by 50β60%, lower out of pocket expenses, and improve outcomes for critical and chronic conditions in a state with historically low specialist density.
The Government of Tripura has taken a major step toward bridging the healthcare access gap in the northeastern region by establishing a dedicated telemedicine linkage with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi and forging a strategic partnership with GNRC Hospitals (Guwahati Neurological Research Centre). The dual initiative, formally launched on January 28, 2026, aims to bring super-specialty consultations, second opinions, and advanced treatment planning directly to Tripuraβs patients without the need for long-distance travel.
Under the AIIMS telemedicine framework, district hospitals, community health centres, and primary care facilities across Tripura are now connected via high-speed, secure video platforms to AIIMS specialists. Patients can receive real-time consultations in specialties including cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and high-risk paediatrics. The system supports live sharing of diagnostic images (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound), lab reports, and patient history, enabling accurate remote diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
Complementing the AIIMS link, GNRC Hospitals will serve as a regional partner for follow up care, complex procedures, and capacity building. GNRC will:
- Provide on site training and skill transfer for Tripura doctors and nurses
- Establish streamlined referral pathways for patients requiring in person intervention
- Offer periodic outreach OPDs and surgical camps in Tripura
- Support post-consultation monitoring and medication management through tele-follow-up
The partnership is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to Guwahati or Delhi by 50β60%, lower out of pocket expenses (travel, accommodation, lost wages), and decrease delays in diagnosis and treatment particularly for time-sensitive conditions such as stroke, heart attacks, cancers, and organ failure.
Tripura Health Minister said: βFor too long, our people have faced hardship travelling long distances for specialised care. With AIIMS telemedicine and GNRCβs partnership, we are bringing world class expertise to Tripuraβs doorstep saving lives, reducing costs, and building local capacity for the future.β
The initiative is supported by high speed optical fibre connectivity under the BharatNet project and integrates with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) for seamless patient record sharing via ABHA IDs. Funding comes from state health budgets, central schemes (NHM, PM-ABHIM), and CSR contributions.
The launch has been widely welcomed by patient advocacy groups and medical associations in the Northeast, who see it as a model that can be replicated across other underserved states.
βDistance should never be a barrier to quality healthcare. This partnership with AIIMS and GNRC brings hope to thousands of families in Tripura ensuring timely specialist care without leaving home.β
