Union Health Ministry Launches Nationwide Online AI Training Programme for Doctors

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has rolled out a comprehensive online training programme on artificial intelligence tailored specifically for medical professionals across India. The initiative, launched on January 20, 2026, aims to equip doctors with foundational and applied knowledge of AI in clinical practice, diagnostics, patient management, and public health addressing the growing integration of AI tools in hospitals, telemedicine platforms, and national health programmes.

Glimpse:

The free, self-paced programme is hosted on the Ministry’s digital learning portal and covers essential topics such as AI fundamentals, medical imaging interpretation, clinical decision support, ethical considerations, bias mitigation, data privacy under DPDP Act, and real-world applications in specialties like radiology, pathology, oncology, and primary care. Open to all registered medical practitioners, the course includes interactive modules, case studies, quizzes, and certification upon completion. It forms part of the broader effort to build AI readiness among India’s 1.3 million+ doctors under the IndiaAI Mission and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

In a significant move to prepare India’s medical workforce for the AI era, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a dedicated online training programme focused on artificial intelligence in healthcare. The initiative, formally rolled out on January 20, 2026, is accessible free of charge to all registered medical practitioners through the Ministry’s e-learning portal and is designed to bridge the knowledge gap as AI tools become increasingly embedded in clinical workflows, diagnostic systems, and public health surveillance.

The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with leading medical institutions, AI experts from IITs and IISc, and clinical specialists from AIIMS and other premier hospitals. It is structured into modular, self-paced units covering:

Core concepts of AI, machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing

Applications in medical imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound) and pathology

Clinical decision support systems, predictive analytics, and early warning tools

AI in telemedicine, remote monitoring, and chronic disease management

Ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, bias detection, explainability, and patient safety

Case studies from Indian and global deployments, with emphasis on tuberculosis, diabetes, maternal health, and oncology

Each module includes video lectures, interactive simulations, real-world case discussions, quizzes, and downloadable resources. Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate jointly issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and partner academic institutions, which can be used for continuing medical education (CME) credits.

The programme is open to doctors from both public and private sectors, including those in rural and remote areas, with content available in English and Hindi (additional regional languages planned for future phases). The Ministry has also encouraged medical colleges to integrate the course into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula as an elective or supplementary module.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative: β€œAI is no longer a futuristic concept it is actively transforming diagnostics, treatment planning, and health system efficiency. Our doctors must be equipped to use these tools confidently and responsibly. This training programme is a foundational step toward building an AI-ready medical workforce that can deliver better, faster, and more equitable care to every citizen.”

The launch aligns with the IndiaAI Mission’s focus on skilling and capacity building, as well as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission’s emphasis on technology-enabled healthcare delivery. The Ministry plans to track participation and feedback to refine content and expand the programme to include advanced tracks on generative AI, multimodal models, and AI governance in healthcare.

Early registration numbers have been encouraging, with thousands of doctors enrolling within the first week. The programme is expected to reach over 100,000 physicians in its first year, creating a critical mass of AI-literate clinicians who can lead adoption and innovation at the grassroots level.

β€œAI will augment not replace the clinical judgment of doctors. This programme ensures our physicians are not just users of AI, but informed leaders who can harness it safely and effectively for India’s healthcare needs.”
