The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved the establishment of a 500-bed super speciality hospital in Varanasi at an estimated cost of ₹500 crore. This new facility will provide advanced tertiary care services, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, and trauma, significantly enhancing healthcare access in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Glimpse:
The greenfield project will be developed on land adjacent to the existing BHU Trauma Centre and Institute of Medical Sciences. It aims to reduce patient referrals to Lucknow or Delhi, offer specialized treatments locally, and support Varanasi’s growing role as a medical hub. Construction is expected to begin soon, with phased completion targeted over the next few years.
In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath cabinet has greenlit the construction of a state-of-the-art 500-bed super speciality hospital in Varanasi with a budget of ₹500 crore. The decision reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to decentralizing advanced medical services and easing the burden on overcrowded facilities in Lucknow and metro cities.
The hospital will be strategically located near the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Trauma Centre and Institute of Medical Sciences campus, leveraging existing academic and clinical synergies. It will offer comprehensive super speciality services across key disciplines:
Oncology (medical, surgical, and radiation).
Cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
Neurology and neurosurgery.
Nephrology and urology.
Advanced trauma and critical care.
Gastroenterology and GI surgery.
This facility addresses long-standing demands for tertiary care in Varanasi and surrounding districts, where patients often travel long distances for complex treatments. By bringing AIIMS-level services locally, it will reduce out-of-pocket expenses, shorten wait times, and improve outcomes for critical cases.
The project aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader healthcare roadmap, including recent approvals for medical colleges, trauma centres, and upgrades in districts like Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, and Prayagraj. Varanasi, as the Chief Minister’s constituency and a cultural-medical hub, has seen multiple health investments including the upgraded BHU hospital and cancer institutes.
Funding will come from state resources, with potential central assistance under schemes like PMSSY. Land allocation and detailed planning are underway, with construction tenders expected shortly.
“This super speciality hospital will provide world-class treatment facilities to the people of Purvanchal, reducing the need to travel to distant cities.”
