The UP government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, has approved ₹ 13.46 crore to modernise 20 government hospitals across the state with upgraded medical and diagnostic equipment. According to the official announcement, the upgrades will include digital X-ray systems, ECG machines, ultrasound devices and specialised equipment required for small-incision cataract (phaco) surgeries aiming to reduce burden on tertiary care centres and bring quality diagnostics closer to patients. 

Already, ₹ 7.45 crore has been sanctioned for procurement. The hospitals slated for upgrades include prominent facilities such as Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital (Prayagraj), the District Women’s Hospital (Bareilly), Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital (Moradabad), and Balrampur Hospital (Lucknow), among others. Several other district- and sub-district hospitals across Mahoba, Jhansi, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Mau, Auraiya, Farrukhabad etc. will also benefit. 

The plan also includes upgrades for recently constructed hospitals  for example, a new 50-bed hospital in Mirzapur will have a dedicated ophthalmology department and separate eye-care ward, under the funding. The government states that accurate and timely diagnosis enabled by updated equipment is critical for effective treatment, patient outcomes, and reducing reliance on distant tertiary facilities. 

This move is part of the state’s broader push under the “Viksit UP 2047” framework  to modernise healthcare infrastructure, improve equity of access, and strengthen public hospital capacity across urban, semi-urban and rural districts.
