BharatGen and Amrita Institutions have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively build India’s sovereign AI model specifically tailored for healthcare. The initiative aims to create a secure, locally trained large language model (LLM) that understands Indian clinical contexts, multilingual medical terminology, regional disease patterns, and privacy regulations—ensuring data sovereignty while powering advanced clinical decision support, diagnostics, and public health applications.
Glimpse:
Under the MoU, BharatGen will provide its foundational sovereign AI framework, while Amrita Institutions contribute clinical expertise, anonymized Indian health datasets, and validation environments. The resulting healthcare-focused AI model will support multilingual consultations, evidence-based recommendations, drug interaction checks, and predictive analytics—all hosted within India to comply with data localization and DPDP Act requirements. The partnership targets deployment in public hospitals, telemedicine platforms, and research ecosystems to improve care quality and equity nationwide.
BharatGen, India’s flagship sovereign AI initiative, has partnered with Amrita Institutions (Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and its healthcare arm) through a formal MoU to develop a dedicated sovereign AI model for the healthcare sector. The collaboration, announced in early 2026, marks one of the most significant steps toward creating India-centric, privacy-first AI that can operate independently of foreign models and cloud infrastructure.
The joint effort will focus on building a domain-specific large language model trained exclusively on Indian clinical data covering diverse languages (Hindi, English, regional tongues), medical terminologies, drug names (generics and brands), regional epidemiology, and treatment protocols. Key goals include:
Clinical decision support assisting doctors with differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and guideline adherence Multilingual patient interaction enabling voice/text-based consultations in local languages with cultural sensitivity Predictive & preventive analytics early risk detection for diabetes, hypertension, TB, maternal complications, and emerging infections Public health intelligence supporting disease surveillance, resource allocation, and outbreak prediction Secure & sovereign architecture data processing and model hosting within India to meet DPDP Act, ABDM, and national security standards
Amrita Institutions will provide anonymized, ethically sourced clinical datasets from its hospitals and research network, along with validation through multi-site trials. BharatGen contributes its foundational sovereign LLM infrastructure, compute resources, and expertise in large-scale model training.
The partnership aligns with national priorities under IndiaAI Mission, Digital India, and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It addresses critical gaps foreign AI models often lack India-specific context, leading to lower accuracy on local accents, diseases, and drug interactions while ensuring full control over sensitive health data.
The MoU includes joint R&D labs, clinician feedback loops, ethical AI guidelines, and phased pilots starting in Amrita’s network before wider public-sector rollout.
This collaboration positions India to leapfrog toward self-reliant, culturally attuned AI in one of the world’s largest healthcare markets.
“A sovereign AI for healthcare is not just about technology it’s about trust, privacy, and delivering care that truly understands India’s people and their needs.”
