The NHS App has been upgraded with an AI-powered triage system that allows patients to assess symptoms and instantly book appointments, transforming digital access to primary care services.
Glimpse:
Announced in April 2026, an AI-driven tool called Smart Triage has been integrated into the NHS App, enabling over one million patients to directly book appointments without delays. The system analyzes patient symptoms in real time and offers suitable appointment slots, removing the need for manual review by GP staff.
In a major step toward digital healthcare transformation, the NHS App has been enhanced with an AI-powered triage system that allows patients to assess symptoms and instantly book appointments with healthcare providers.
Previously, patients using the app could only request appointments, which were then manually reviewed and prioritized by GP practices a process that could take up to 24 hours. The new AI integration eliminates this delay by enabling real time triage and direct booking, significantly improving access to care.
The system, known as Smart Triage and developed by Rapid Health, allows users to input their symptoms and receive immediate guidance on the type of care required. Based on this assessment, patients are shown available appointment slots and can book instantly within the app.
Currently, the tool is being used across more than 200 GP practices and primary care networks, covering around three million patients, with over one million already benefiting from instant booking capabilities.
The innovation also introduces 24/7 access to appointments, offering patients greater flexibility and reducing the pressure of traditional booking systems often associated with long wait times and the โ8 am rushโ for GP slots.
From an operational perspective, the AI tool helps reduce administrative workload for healthcare staff by automating routine triage tasks. This allows clinicians and reception teams to focus on more complex patient needs, improving overall efficiency in primary care delivery.
The rollout aligns with the NHSโs broader digital strategy, which aims to make the NHS App the primary โfront doorโ to healthcare services, enabling patients to manage appointments, access care, and interact with providers digitally.
Experts view this development as a significant milestone in healthcare digitization, demonstrating how AI can enhance patient convenience while optimizing healthcare system capacity. However, continued expansion and careful implementation will be key to ensuring equitable access and maintaining clinical safety standards.
