Assam Greenlights ₹4,257 Cr Overhaul of Guwahati Medical College & State Health Institutes

The Assam Cabinet has approved a massive ₹4,257 crore project to redevelop Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), boost paramedical education, and improve health science research part of a broader drive to modernize public health infrastructure.

Glimpse:

Assam’s government has sanctioned ₹4,257 crore for an ambitious healthcare infrastructure upgrade. The plan includes rebuilding GMCH into a modern facility with 5,000-patient capacity, strengthening Srimanta Sankardev University of Health Sciences, and improving paramedical institutes. Funding is shared between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the state.

In a landmark move to strengthen health infrastructure, the Assam cabinet has approved a ₹4,257 crore mega-project that spans multiple health education and service delivery institutions. Among its high-profile components is the redevelopment of Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), which will be transformed into a modern, large-capacity facility.

A major portion of the budget ₹2,200 crore is earmarked for revamping the main GMCH campus. This includes demolishing the existing structure and rebuilding it to handle up to 5,000 patients at a time, making it one of the largest government hospital facilities in the region.

Beyond GMCH, the plan intends to fortify the Srimanta Sankardev University of Health Sciences and upgrade various paramedical colleges across Assam. The funding model is also notable: 80% of the project cost will be supported through loans from the Asian Development Bank, with the remaining 20% borne by the Assam state government.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this reform is expected to significantly boost the quality of medical education, research capabilities, and healthcare service delivery in Assam. The improved infrastructure aims to handle higher patient loads, offer enhanced specialty services, and reduce strain on current facilities.

“When the infrastructure is built to match ambition, patients don’t just get treated they get dignity. This isn’t just bricks and mortar; it’s lives improved.”
