Assam Health Minister Inaugurates Advanced 1.5 Tesla MRI Centre at Tinsukia Medical College

Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal has inaugurated a state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla MRI centre at Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital (TMCH), the first such facility in the Tinsukia region. This โ‚น12.5 crore Siemens unit enhances diagnostic precision for patients in Upper Assam and neighbouring areas, reducing travel needs and aligning with the vision of “Healthy Society, Healthy Assam.”

Glimpse:

The new MRI centre, operational under Assam Medical Services Corporation Limited (AMSCL), offers high-resolution imaging for complex conditions, benefiting residents of Tinsukia, nearby Assam districts, and Arunachal Pradesh. Previously, patients travelled to Dibrugarh for MRI services. TMCH, inaugurated in March 2024, continues rapid development as a key healthcare hub in Upper Assam.

Assam has strengthened its medical diagnostic infrastructure with the inauguration of a cutting-edge 1.5 Tesla MRI centre at Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) in Makum. Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal flagged off the facility on January 5, 2026, marking a significant advancement for Upper Assam’s healthcare landscape.

The Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI unit, costing approximately โ‚น12.5 crore (including installation), delivers modern imaging technology comparable to top national institutions. It enables detailed scans for neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, and oncological conditions vastly improving accuracy and speed of diagnosis.

Previously, patients from Tinsukia and surrounding areas (including parts of Arunachal Pradesh) relied on distant centres like Dibrugarh for MRI services. The new facility eliminates this hardship, providing affordable, timely access locally.

Minister Singhal emphasized: โ€œThis new 1.5 Tesla MRI centre will vastly improve the accuracy and speed of medical diagnosis while ensuring that people from Tinsukia and neighbouring districts can access affordable and timely healthcare. This center reflects our government’s vision of โ€˜Healthy Society, Healthy Assamโ€™.โ€

He added that such upgrades not only boost diagnostic capacity but also support timely disease detection, better outcomes, and lower overall healthcare costs for the public.

The centre will operate under AMSCL, ensuring professional management and maintenance.

TMCH Background: Inaugurated in March 2024, Tinsukia Medical College has quickly emerged as a promising institution in Upper Assam, offering medical education and tertiary services amid the state’s expanding network of 14 functional medical colleges (with more in pipeline).

This MRI launch complements Assam’s broader health investments, decentralizing advanced care and reducing metro dependency.

โ€œWith the commissioning of these MRI facilities, the government is not only enhancing diagnostic capacity but also ensuring timely detection of diseases, better treatment outcomes, and a reduction in the overall cost of healthcare for the general public.โ€
