Himachal Pradesh Approves ₹1,617 Cr Plan to Scale Healthcare Infrastructure

The Himachal Pradesh government has approved a ₹1,617 crore plan to significantly expand and upgrade healthcare facilities across the state. The initiative focuses on new hospital construction, medical college enhancements, equipment modernization, and rural health centre strengthening aiming to improve access, reduce referral burden, and deliver quality care closer to remote and hilly communities.

Glimpse:

The ₹1,617 crore allocation will fund new district hospitals, upgradation of existing facilities, addition of specialty departments, advanced diagnostic equipment, and workforce expansion. Key priorities include strengthening tertiary care in underserved districts, boosting emergency services, and integrating digital health tools. The plan aligns with state goals to achieve near-universal access to quality healthcare, especially in high-altitude and tribal areas.

The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has cleared a comprehensive ₹1,617 crore healthcare infrastructure development plan to address long-standing gaps in medical facilities, particularly in remote and mountainous regions. The ambitious initiative, approved in early 2026, will be implemented over the next few years with phased funding from state and central sources.

Major components of the plan include: Construction and upgradation of district hospitals adding bed capacity, ICUs, modular operation theatres, and emergency wings in priority districts Expansion of medical education strengthening existing medical colleges and planning new super-specialty blocks Diagnostic & equipment modernization procurement of MRI, CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray, and lab analysers for faster, accurate diagnosis Rural & primary care strengthening upgrading CHCs, PHCs, and sub-centres with better infrastructure, telemedicine hubs, and maternal/child health facilities Specialty focus dedicated units for cardiology, oncology, nephrology, and trauma care in select hospitals.

The project pays special attention to Himachal’s unique geography high-altitude areas, difficult terrain, and scattered populations by prioritizing mobile medical units, oxygen plants, and resilient infrastructure to withstand harsh winters. It also includes recruitment drives for doctors, nurses, and technicians, along with incentives for postings in remote zones.

Officials highlighted that the plan will reduce the need for patients to travel to Chandigarh, Delhi, or other metros for advanced treatment, easing financial and logistical burdens on families. The initiative complements national schemes like Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY, with a strong push toward digital integration for seamless patient records and teleconsultations.

This major investment reflects Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to making quality healthcare a right for every resident, regardless of location or economic status.

“Healthcare must reach the last mile in our mountains. This ₹1,617 crore plan ensures no Himachali has to travel far for life-saving treatment.”
