Himachal CM Announces ₹3,000 Crore Healthtech Upgrade, Inaugurates Nuclear Medicine Block with PET Scan at IGMC Shimla

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has announced an investment of ₹3,000 crore to upgrade medical technology across all government medical colleges and health institutions in the state. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the new Nuclear Medicine Block at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, which introduces the state’s first government-sector PET scan facility.

Glimpse:

The newly inaugurated Nuclear Medicine Block at IGMC Shimla will provide advanced Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans for early detection and management of cancers, heart conditions, neurological disorders, and infections. An additional ₹8 crore has been allocated for installing a SPECT-CT machine at the same facility. This follows the recent inauguration of a 3 Tesla MRI machine at IGMC in March 2026.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the state’s first government-sector Nuclear Medicine Block at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla. The new facility introduces advanced Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan services, allowing patients to access high end diagnostic imaging within the state instead of travelling elsewhere.

PET scans detect diseases at the metabolic and molecular level, enabling earlier diagnosis compared to traditional CT and MRI scans that identify structural changes later. The technology plays a critical role in cancer staging and restaging, evaluating treatment response, detecting recurrence, and assessing prognosis. It is particularly useful for various malignancies including brain tumours, head and neck cancers, lung carcinoma, breast carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, and others. Beyond oncology, PET scans are also applied in cardiology, neurology, and for evaluating infections and inflammatory conditions where conventional imaging falls short.

During the event, CM Sukhu announced a major ₹3,000 crore investment to upgrade medical technology across all government medical colleges and health institutions in Himachal Pradesh. The goal is to deliver affordable, world class healthcare services closer to the people. As part of this initiative, the government will install a SPECT-CT machine worth ₹8 crore at IGMC Shimla.

This development builds on recent advancements at IGMC, including the inauguration of an advanced 3 Tesla MRI machine in March 2026. The Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to introducing cutting edge technologies to strengthen specialised healthcare services.

“This is the first facility of its kind in the government sector of the state and represents a major step toward strengthening specialised healthcare services. In the coming times, we will invest over ₹3,000 crore to upgrade technology across all medical colleges and other health institutions in the state, with the aim of providing affordable, world class healthcare services at the doorstep of the people.”
