Anushka Shetty Battles Rare Laughing Disease

Actress Anushka Shetty, renowned for her role in the blockbuster Baahubali films, recently disclosed that she suffers from a rare condition known as the "laughing disease," or pseudobulbar affect (PBA). This neurological disorder is characterized by sudden, uncontrollable episodes of laughter or crying.

In an interview with Indiaglitz, the 42-year-old star opened up about her experiences, stating, “I have a laughing disease.

You might wonder, ‘Is laughing a problem?’ For me, it is. If I start laughing, I can’t stop for 15 to 20 minutes. While watching or shooting comedy scenes, I literally roll on the floor laughing, and the shoot has been halted many times.”

Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a senior neurologist, explained to HealthBuzz that PBA, also referred to as the “laughing disease,” involves symptoms of sudden, intense laughter or crying that can last for several minutes, typically between 15 and 20 minutes. He noted that the emotional responses are often disproportionate to the triggering events, causing embarrassment for the person affected as others may not find the situation as amusing.

Dr. Sudhir Kumar suggested some strategies to manage the condition, such as deep, relaxed, and slow breathing during laughing episodes, diverting the mind to another topic, and relaxing the muscles around the shoulder, neck, and chest wall.
