AKTU and BRD Medical College Partner to Advance AI-Driven Medical Device Research

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) in Lucknow has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur to jointly pursue research and development in AI-powered medical devices. The partnership combines AKTU’s engineering and AI expertise with BRD’s clinical infrastructure and real-world patient data to accelerate indigenous innovation in diagnostic tools, surgical robotics, remote monitoring systems, and precision medicine devices.

Glimpse:

The MoU, signed on January 17, 2026, establishes a formal framework for collaborative projects, faculty and student exchanges, joint PhD supervision, and access to BRD’s clinical datasets for AI model training. Initial focus areas include AI-assisted imaging diagnostics, wearable vital sign monitors for rural telemedicine, and predictive analytics for critical care. The collaboration aims to produce cost-effective, Made-in-India medical technologies that address regional health challenges while aligning with national goals of self-reliance in medtech.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest technical universities, has entered a strategic partnership with Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur to co-develop AI-enabled medical devices and solutions. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalised on January 17, 2026, creates a structured platform for combining AKTU’s strong engineering, computer science, and AI research capabilities with BRD Medical College’s extensive clinical experience, patient volumes, and real-world healthcare challenges.

Under the agreement, both institutions will collaborate on joint research projects, share datasets (with strict de-identification and ethical clearances), co-supervise postgraduate and doctoral students, facilitate faculty exchanges, and co-develop prototypes for regulatory and clinical validation. The partnership also includes provisions for organising joint workshops, conferences, and hackathons to nurture talent in AI-medtech convergence.

Priority research themes identified in the MoU include:

AI-assisted diagnostic imaging tools tailored to high-prevalence conditions in eastern Uttar Pradesh (tuberculosis, respiratory diseases, maternal health complications).

Wearable and remote monitoring systems for chronic disease management in rural and underserved areas.

Predictive analytics platforms for early warning in critical care and emergency departments.

Low-cost robotic assistance systems for minimally invasive procedures in district-level hospitals.

Prof. J.P. Pandey, Vice Chancellor of AKTU, described the collaboration as “a natural and powerful synergy” that bridges the gap between engineering innovation and clinical reality. “BRD Medical College sees thousands of patients daily and faces real challenges that our students and researchers can help solve through AI and engineering,” he said. “This partnership will produce practical, affordable technologies that benefit the people of Uttar Pradesh and beyond.”

Prof. G.K. Singh, Principal of BRD Medical College, echoed the sentiment: “We have the clinical cases, the patient diversity, and the real-world problems. AKTU brings the AI expertise and engineering muscle. Together, we can create solutions that are not just world-class but also locally relevant and economically viable.”

The MoU is part of a broader push by Uttar Pradesh to position itself as a major hub for medical technology innovation, complementing recent investments in medical colleges, super-specialty hospitals, and medtech parks. It also aligns with national priorities under the IndiaAI Mission, Make-in-India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns to build indigenous capability in high-value medical devices.

Initial joint projects are expected to begin in the coming months, with the first prototypes and clinical validation studies targeted for late 2026. The partnership will also explore opportunities for technology transfer, startup incubation, and intellectual property generation.

“Robotic surgery should not remain a luxury for metro hospitals. The Mantram Yatra is about showing every surgeon in India that this technology is now accessible, affordable, and Made in India.”
