Intuitive Surgical and IIT Madras Join Forces to Develop Advanced Portable Ultrasound for Breast Cancer Detection

Intuitive Surgical, the global leader in robotic-assisted surgery, has partnered with IIT Madras to co-develop a next-generation portable ultrasound system specifically designed to improve early breast cancer detection in resource-limited settings. The collaboration combines Intuitive’s expertise in precision imaging and robotics with IIT Madras’s strengths in affordable medical device engineering to create a lightweight, AI-enhanced ultrasound probe that enables accurate, non-invasive screening by community health workers and primary care physicians.

Glimpse:

The partnership, announced on January 24, 2026, aims to produce a battery-operated, handheld ultrasound device with built-in AI for real-time lesion detection, automated BI-RADS classification, and guided biopsy support. The system is targeted at rural and semi-urban India, where access to mammography and specialist radiologists remains limited. Prototypes are expected within 18–24 months, with clinical trials planned in collaboration with government primary health centres and oncology networks.

Intuitive Surgical, best known for its da Vinci robotic systems, has entered into a strategic research and development partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to create an innovative portable ultrasound device aimed at revolutionising breast cancer screening in underserved regions. The collaboration, formalised on January 24, 2026, brings together Intuitive’s advanced imaging and AI capabilities with IIT Madras’s proven track record in designing low-cost, high-impact medical technologies for resource-constrained environments.

Breast cancer remains India’s leading cancer among women, with a significant proportion diagnosed at advanced stages due to limited access to screening. Mammography, while effective, requires expensive equipment, trained radiologists, and fixed infrastructure barriers that exclude millions in rural and semi-urban areas. The joint project seeks to address this gap by developing a compact, affordable ultrasound probe that can be used by minimally trained health workers for community-level screening.

The proposed device will feature:

Handheld, wireless design with long battery life for field use

Integrated AI algorithms for automatic detection of masses, microcalcifications, architectural distortions, and abnormal vascularity

Real-time BI-RADS scoring and lesion classification to guide immediate clinical decisions

Guided biopsy mode with augmented reality overlays for accurate sampling

Cloud connectivity for remote expert review and data aggregation in screening programmes

The technology will be optimised for low-bandwidth environments, multilingual interfaces, and integration with Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) for secure patient record linkage. IIT Madras’s Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC) will lead device engineering, miniaturisation, and usability testing, while Intuitive Surgical contributes its deep expertise in ultrasound physics, AI model training, and regulatory pathways for global markets.

Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, Head of HTIC at IIT Madras, stated: “Early detection is the key to saving lives from breast cancer, but current tools are inaccessible to most Indian women. By combining IIT Madras’s affordable design capabilities with Intuitive’s world-leading imaging intelligence, we aim to create a device that empowers frontline health workers to screen effectively and confidently in any setting.”

The project is expected to produce functional prototypes within 18–24 months, followed by multi-centre clinical validation studies in India and potential expansion to other low- and middle-income countries. The partnership also includes commitments to training programmes for health workers and pathways for regulatory approval in India (CDSCO) and international markets.

This collaboration reflects a growing trend of global medtech leaders partnering with Indian academic institutions to co-create solutions tailored to emerging-market needs leveraging India’s engineering talent and clinical diversity to address global health challenges.

“Breast cancer doesn’t wait for access to big hospitals. This portable, AI-guided ultrasound will bring early detection to where women live turning community health workers into life-saving diagnosticians.”
