Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, has announced the establishment of its first digital medical innovation base in China, situated in the BioPark at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Beijing E-Town). The facility marks a strategic escalation: from device manufacturing and clinical training to full-fledged digital healthcare innovation tailored to the Chinese market.
According to the company, the base will centre on AI and big-data platforms that manage disease-care pathways, notably in cardiovascular health, minimally invasive surgery and neuroscience. Medtronic articulated that the hub will include medical-training facilities, patient-care centres, and digital follow-up services creating a comprehensive ecosystem for innovation, application and patient experience.
The facility will leverage Beijing’s rich clinical and academic ecosystem, embedding features such as a Medtronicmuseum and innovation centre. The base is formally expected to open by the end of the year, providing a localised full-value-chain footprint that includes development, deployment and patient-service components. Medtronic’s CEO noted that the move builds on 36 years of operations in China and aims to deliver patient-centred digital models in one of the world’s largest healthcare markets.
By creating this hub, Medtronic seeks to respond to China’s push-for innovation in digital healthcare, the integration of remote care, chronic-disease management and smart-hospital frameworks. The initiative also aligns with China’s broader healthcare priorities to improve access, regional equity and advanced care. Observers note that this step strengthens Medtronic’s competitive position in China’s evolving med-tech landscape.
