Glimpse:
Torrent Diagnostics’ flagship national reference lab in Navi Mumbai is equipped with fully automated high-throughput analysers, molecular diagnostics, histopathology, cytogenetics, and NGS capabilities, processing up to 1 lakh samples per day. The lab will serve as the central hub for over 1,000 collection centres and hospital partnerships nationwide, offering more than 4,500 tests with rapid turnaround times, strict quality controls (NABL & CAP accreditation in progress), and integration with digital health platforms. The launch positions Torrent as a major new player in India’s $10+ billion diagnostics market.
The Torrent Group, one of India’s leading business conglomerates with established presence in pharmaceuticals, power, and real estate, has officially entered the diagnostics sector with the launch of Torrent Diagnostics. The company unveiled its flagship national reference laboratory in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, describing it as the largest and most advanced standalone diagnostic facility in the country.
Spread across 1.2 lakh square feet, the Navi Mumbai lab is designed as a fully automated, high-throughput centre capable of processing up to 1 lakh samples daily. It houses cutting-edge infrastructure including modular high-speed analysers for clinical chemistry and immunoassay, next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms for oncology and rare disease genomics, whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing capabilities, advanced histopathology and cytopathology suites, cytogenetics and FISH labs, flow cytometry, and molecular microbiology for infectious disease diagnostics.
Torrent Diagnostics aims to operate on a hub-and-spoke model, with the Navi Mumbai facility serving as the central reference lab supporting a rapidly expanding network of over 1,000 collection centres, hospital lab management partnerships, and doctor referral channels across India. The company has already signed agreements with several large hospital chains and diagnostic chains for outsourced lab services and plans to reach over 2,000 touchpoints within the next 18–24 months.
The lab promises more than 4,500 tests across routine biochemistry, haematology, serology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and specialized oncology and genetic testing menus. Turnaround time commitments range from 2–4 hours for routine tests to 24–48 hours for complex molecular and genomic assays. Torrent has invested heavily in quality systems and is pursuing simultaneous NABL and CAP accreditation to meet international standards.
Speaking at the inauguration, Samir Mehta, Chairman of the Torrent Group, said the entry into diagnostics is a natural extension of the group’s long-standing commitment to healthcare through Torrent Pharmaceuticals and its hospital initiatives. He highlighted that the new venture will focus on accuracy, affordability, and accessibility, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities where quality diagnostic services remain limited.
Torrent Diagnostics has also announced digital-first features including integration with major EHR and ABDM-compliant platforms, real-time test tracking via mobile app, home collection in over 500 cities, and AI-assisted report interpretation for select high-complexity tests.
The Navi Mumbai lab is expected to be fully operational within the next 60–90 days, with commercial services commencing in phases. Industry analysts view the launch as a strong signal of Torrent Group’s intent to become a top-tier national player in the fast-consolidating Indian diagnostics market, currently dominated by large chains and regional leaders.
“Diagnostics is the foundation of modern medicine. With this lab, we are building India’s most advanced and accessible diagnostic backbone one that combines scale, science, and speed for every Indian.”
