The Government of Andhra Pradesh is planning a 500-acre expansion of its medical devices manufacturing ecosystem in Visakhapatnam, named MedTech Manufacturing Zone 2.0, aimed at accelerating domestic production, attracting global investment and strengthening Indiaโs medical device supply chain.
Glimpse:
The MedTech Zone 2.0 will build on the existing Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) by offering large-scale land, plug-and-play infrastructure, and incentives for manufacturers of surgical equipment, diagnostic devices, implants, wearable health tech and more with an eye on promoting exports and reducing import dependence.
The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed the development of a new 500-acre single-window medical devices manufacturing zone in Visakhapatnam, dubbed Medical Devices Manufacturing Zone 2.0, as part of its strategy to cement the stateโs status as a national hub for medical technology production. The planned expansion is expected to provide world-class infrastructure, logistics, specialised facilities and policy support to domestic and global medtech companies looking to set up manufacturing operations in India.
This initiative will build upon the success of the existing Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ)ย the countryโs flagship medical manufacturing and testing ecosystem by scaling up land availability, power supply, certification labs, export facilities and R&D partnerships. The expanded zone is anticipated to support the entire lifecycle of device production, including R&D, prototyping, quality testing, assembly and mass manufacturing for products ranging from surgical disposables to advanced diagnostics and electronic health devices.
Andhra Pradesh leadership has emphasised the economic and healthcare impact of the proposed zone: creating employment opportunities, attracting foreign and domestic investment, enhancing export capacity and enabling Indian manufacturers to compete globally. The government also plans to collaborate with industry associations, clinical partners and educational institutions to foster innovation, workforce training and quality assurance in manufacturing processes.
The move mirrors national thrusts on Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) policiesย where boosting indigenous production of high-value medical technology is seen as both an economic priority and a strategic imperative for healthcare security.
โThis expanded MedTech manufacturing zone will be a game-changer unlocking scale, investment and global competitiveness for Indiaโs medical device industry.โ
