Kerala to Build ₹271 Crore Organ and Tissue Transplant Institute in Kozhikode

The 350-bed facility with 10 operating theatres aims to perform over 500 kidney and 50 heart transplants a year and cut costs to about a third.
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has announced that the Keralam Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant will come up in Kozhikode within 30 months.
The project
The institute will be built on 20 acres on Chevayur Golf Link Road at a cost of ₹271 crore. It will have 350 beds and 10 operating theatres.
Once running, it is expected to perform about 1,100 corneal transplants, 520 kidney transplants, 50 heart transplants, 40 lung transplants and 120 bone-marrow transplants each year. A dermatology hospital costing ₹35 crore will also be built on the campus.
Lower costs
The Chief Minister said bringing all transplant services under one roof would bring treatment costs down to roughly one-third of current levels. The state also plans wellness and rehabilitation facilities as part of its push to position Kerala as a healthcare destination.
