IIIT Hyderabad Opens BrainLab, a High-Density EEG Facility for Brain Research

The DST-funded lab pairs a 128-channel EEG system with eye-tracking and skin-response sensors to study attention, perception and learning in Indian populations.
The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) has opened BrainLab, a human electroencephalography (EEG) research facility built to study how the brain processes information, attention, perception and behaviour.
The lab was set up with support from the Department of Science and Technology under its Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure (DST-FIST) programme. The institute received the grant in 2024 under the life sciences stream of the scheme.
What the lab can do
BrainLab is equipped with a 128-channel high-density EEG system, a 32-channel mobile EEG system for experiments outside the lab, a digitiser that tracks electrode positions, a research-grade eye tracker integrated with EEG, and galvanic skin response sensors that capture physiological arousal.
Together, the instruments allow researchers to run tightly controlled cognitive neuroscience experiments and to build original datasets from Indian participants — an area where much of the global literature has relied on Western populations.
Open to startups and industry
The facility is housed with the institute's Cognitive Science Lab headed by Prof. Bapi Raju, with Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar as faculty in-charge. Faculty members Dr. Bhaktee Dongaonkar, Dr. Vinoo Alluri, Dr. Priyanka Srivastava and Dr. Kavita Vemuri are also associated with the work, which spans cognitive science, AI, language, learning and human–computer interaction.
Apart from IIIT faculty and students, BrainLab will be available to startups, industry and outside research groups on a paid-access basis. The institute plans a workshop on 10–11 December 2026 as part of the Annual Conference of Cognitive Science (ACCS) 2026.
