Arunachal Pradesh Rolls Out "Shishu Mapan" AI App to Measure Newborns at Home

Built with Wadhwani AI, the app lets ASHA workers estimate a baby's weight, length and head size from a short video.
Arunachal Pradesh's Department of Health and Family Welfare has launched Shishu Mapan, an AI-based application for newborn care, in East Siang district. The tool was developed with Wadhwani AI and supported by the District Health Society, East Siang.
How it works
The app uses a short video to estimate a baby's body measurements — weight, length, head circumference and chest circumference — for infants up to 42 days old. It also lets health workers record home-based newborn care visits electronically, replacing paper registers.
Accurate measurements in the first weeks of life help catch low birth weight and growth problems early, when timely care makes the biggest difference.
Training on the ground
A three-day training in Ruksin, Pasighat and Mebo blocks prepared 108 ASHA workers and 15 ASHA facilitators to use the app. Field tests in five districts were used to adapt it to local conditions.
After assessing usability, accuracy, feasibility and community acceptance in East Siang, the state plans to extend it to West Siang.
