10-Hour Surgery at CARE Hospitals, HITEC City Re-attaches 19-Year-Old Worker's Severed Forearm

A multi-specialty team restored blood flow, bone and soft tissue after a drill-machine accident; the young worker has early finger movement and sensation.
Surgeons at CARE Hospitals, HITEC City in Hyderabad have successfully re-attached the right forearm of a 19-year-old worker whose arm was completely severed in a drill-machine accident at an industrial site.
The young man was rushed to the hospital after the accident. A team of specialists took him into theatre for a replantation procedure that lasted about 10 hours.
How the arm was saved
The surgery involved thoroughly cleaning the damaged tissue, fixing the broken bones with plates, re-joining the blood vessels to restore circulation, and reconstructing the soft tissue. In the following days he needed further wound care and skin grafting before he was discharged in a stable condition.
The team was led by Dr. Divya Sai Narsingam, Senior Consultant, Plastic Surgery, with Dr. K. Harikrishna Reddy, Senior Consultant, General Surgery, and Dr. Gottemukkala Ashok Raju, Clinical Director and Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics.
Dr. Narsingam said the re-attached forearm is viable, blood circulation is normal and the team is seeing encouraging movement and sensation in the patient's fingers.
Time is critical
Doctors stress that in traumatic amputations the chances of a successful replantation are highest when the patient — and the amputated part, wrapped in a clean moist cloth, sealed in a plastic bag and kept on ice without direct contact — reaches a hospital with microsurgery facilities as quickly as possible.
The patient is now continuing rehabilitation, with regular follow-up to track how much function returns to his hand.
