WVU Health System Completes $800 Million Takeover of Five-Hospital Independence Health

The deal expands West Virginia University Health System to 30 hospitals with more than $10 billion in combined revenue.
West Virginia University Health System has completed its acquisition of Independence Health System, a five-hospital network in western Pennsylvania. The deal, first announced in November 2025, closed on 1 October after regulatory approval.
Investment commitment
WVU has committed $800 million over five years to Independence's hospitals for clinical services and infrastructure. Independence reported over $1.2 billion in annual revenue and an operating loss of $19.5 million in fiscal 2025.
The acquisition takes WVU from 25 to 30 hospitals, with combined annual operating revenue of more than $10 billion. Independence has about 925 beds and nearly 7,000 employees across a 10-county area.
Conditions
Pennsylvania's Attorney General required WVU to keep the hospitals operating for at least five years, maintain charity care policies and put safeguards in place between its insurance and provider businesses.
