Assam Opens 430-Bed Bongaigaon Medical College, Taking State's Count to 17

Built at Rs 611 crore, the hospital spares patients from lower Assam a 200-km trip to Guwahati; the state targets 30 medical colleges by 2032.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 6 October inaugurated the Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital, along with other district projects worth about Rs 711 crore.
The 430-bed hospital was built at a cost of Rs 611 crore on 151 bighas of land and includes an academic block, student hostels and supporting facilities.
Closer care for lower Assam
The hospital is expected to serve Bongaigaon, Baxirhat and Chirang, including tribal and tea-garden communities who previously had to travel more than 200 km to Guwahati for specialist treatment.
More colleges on the way
With Bongaigaon, Assam now has 17 medical colleges, including AIIMS Guwahati and ESIC Medical College. Colleges are under construction at nine more places — Charaideo, Biswanath Chariali, Golaghat, Morigaon, Tamulpur, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Sribhumi and Goalpara. The Chief Minister said the state expects to open about two new medical colleges a year and reach 30 by 2032.
