Telangana to Expand Geriatric and Palliative Care Clinics as Population Ages, Says Health Minister

Damodar Raja Narasimha asked officials to plan for an older Telangana, study elderly health needs and clear all pending salaries and stipends in the health department.
Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha has directed officials to strengthen the state's public health system for a growing elderly population, including expanding geriatric and palliative care clinics across all districts.
At a review meeting at his residence in Banjara Hills, the minister said falling fertility rates and rising life expectancy mean the needs of the future health system must be anticipated and prepared for now. He asked for a comprehensive study of the health conditions and disease burden among older people in the state, with a special focus on non-communicable diseases.
Lessons from Japan
The Principal Secretary (Health) and the Health Commissioner briefed the minister on a recent study tour of Japan, covering the country's elderly welfare policies, health system design and specialised services for senior citizens.
Salaries to be cleared
The minister also ordered the immediate release of pending salaries and stipends to sanitation workers, outsourced and contract staff, regular employees and students receiving stipends, and said no delays would be tolerated.
