PMCH Patna to Open Bihar's First Dedicated Spine Sub-Speciality Unit

The unit under the Orthopaedics department is expected to start by the end of October; the hospital has also begun free cleft surgeries for children.
Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is setting up a dedicated Spine Sub-Speciality Unit under its Department of Orthopaedics to treat complex spinal disorders. The unit is expected to become operational by the end of this month.
Dr. Mahesh Prasad, Associate Professor of Orthopaedics, will lead the unit, which he said would be the first facility of its kind in Bihar.
Resources sought
The team has asked the state health department for a separate operating theatre, specialised equipment and additional resources. The Bihar cabinet had approved 39 new posts at PMCH in May, paving the way for the expansion.
Until now, spine cases at the hospital were managed within routine orthopaedic services. A dedicated unit is expected to shorten waiting times and reduce the need for patients to travel out of the state for complex surgery.
Cleft surgery drive
PMCH has also launched a surgical campaign for children born with cleft lip and palate under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram, performing five operations on the first day.
